Antique brown transferware ironstone dinner plates in the Hyson pattern. A set of 4 Asian-inspired brown transfer printed ironstone plates on a white background. The central motif has three pagodas, with two figures on a bridge. One is standing holding a parasol, the other is seated. The plates have an ornate floral and scroll border. They are all marked with an eagle image and with the pattern name of HYSON in capital letters at the bottom. On top of the eagle is “IRONSTONE” and a standard impressed mark indicating the maker: “J. Clemenston Shelton”. English. Circa 1840’s. Sold as a set of 4 dinner plates.

Antique brown transferware ironstone dinner plates in the Hyson pattern. A set of 4 Asian-inspired brown transferware ironstone plates on a white background. Diameter: 9 1/2″

Condition
Minor variances in brown transfer images commonly found on ironstone wears of this period. Minor crazing and discolouration on one of the plates.  Small flea bite on the rim of one of the plates. In overall good condition for their age.

About Joseph Clementson*
Good quality and standard earthenware was made by J. Clementson, High Street (Shelton). Hanley c. 1839-64. He enjoyed a large trade with North America and produced a good range of ironstone and white granite wears. Joseph Clementson retired in favour of four sons c. 1864 and they continued working  under the new style “Clementson Bros.
