About Gaudy Welsh*
Gaudy Welsh was made in Britain primarily for the North American import market during the 19th century. Patterned after Imari (Japanese porcelain), it was sold to the working class, and given its name by Americans. Patterns of Gaudy Welsh are almost endless. It’s a form of hand-painted decoration applied primarily to jugs, bowls and miniatures between 1820-1860. Gaudy Welsh was produced in three major areas: Staffordshire,  Newcastle/Sunderland and Wales. Wares vary from earthenware, creamware, ironstone or bone china. The major colours are an underglaze cobalt blue (often in panels), rust or burnt orange/russet, and copper lustre – all on a white background. Other minor parts often include: pink lustre, green and yellow. The design is usually floral.
