Antique Gaudy Welsh coffee can or mug. Circa 1820. This antique coffee mug is hand painted in the “Pagoda” pattern, using the typical Gaudy Welsh colours of cobalt blue, green, russet and lustre on a cream coloured ground. Originally manufactured in Wales, Gaudy Welsh was later produced in Britain during the early nineteenth century, patterned after Japanese Imari, sold to the working class, and given its name by Americans (Howard Williams, 1978).
3 inches (8 cm) tall, 4¼ inches (11 cm) at its widest point, and a diameter of 3 and 3/8 inches (9 cm) at the base.
This very old mug has signs of use along the rim (discolouration) and obvious shelf wear on the bottom (see photos). There are also some anomalies in the glaze, which would have occurred during production but are not considered to be flaws. Otherwise the coffee can is in good antique condition, with no chips, cracks or crazing.
