Antique Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) beaded double match holder. This antique beaded whimsy was crafted in 1904 and was most likely Mohawk made as they were famed for their beadwork. The word “matches” and the 1904 date are outlined in green beads. The other designs are picked out in shades of brown, tan, pink and white on a tan cotton background.
Excluding the tassles, the piece is 8½ inches (21.5 cm) long and 6 inches (15 cm) at its widest point. The tassles add an additional 1½ inches (4 cm) to the overall length.
There is some slight age staining to the background cotton (see photos) but amazingly enough there seems to be only one white sprengperlen bead missing at the top of the right-hand flower figure (see close-up photo).
