Mid-Victorian bar brooch with prong-set red stone. Circa 1880. This substantial gold-tone bar brooch has a central shell motif featuring a prong-set red stone. The central motif is surrounded on either side by a stylized leaf frond emerging from a smaller silver-tone ring. At each of the lobed ends of the brooch there are three quatrefoil elements. The large tube hinge and the c-clasp date this piece to the mid-Victorian era. This is a very old pin and shows signs of wear on the matte surface behind the decorative elements. However, the hinge works smoothly, the pin is straight and the c-clasp holds securely. For the fan of Victoriana or Steampunk style, this brooch would make a welcome gift.
It is 2¾ inches (7 cm) long and ¾ inch (2 cm) wide.
