Pair of Victorian claret jugs, British. Circa 1880. Hand blown green glass decanters in a melon ribbed pattern with: elaborate enamel and gilded decoration, the original blown hollow “acorn” stoppers, applied clear “rigaree” handles (rigaree is a glass blowing term designating a pattern of raised bands on glass), and the pontil marks on the base. This pair would make a great gift for the lover of Victoriana. Sold as a pair.
The claret jugs are 10¾ inches (27.5 cm) to the top of the stoppers and the base is 4¾ inches (12.5 cm) in diameter.
The detailed enamel design remains immaculate; the glass has no chips, scratches or cracks; however, there is some minor wear to the gilding commensurate with the age of the item.
