Signed Sherman blue rhinestone and carnival glass cabochon brooch. From the 1960’s. This rather rare brooch by Gustave Sherman consists of two blue carnival glass cabochons surrounded by various sized rondel and navette shaped rhinestones. Gustave Sherman produced exquisite costume jewellery out of Montreal, from 1947 to 1981, using only Swarovski crystals, which were hand-set in gold or silver tone metal and then rhodium plated. Sherman jewellery was expensive when it was new and was sold by high-end jewelers across Canada. One of the distinctive characteristics of Sherman jewellery is its layered, three dimensional design. In between and on top of each of the glass cabochons are two smaller arrangements of four rhinestones, which add a three-dimensional quality to this piece.
The brooch is 2 and 3/8 inches (6.5 cm) by 1½ inches (4 cm) and rises almost ¾ inch (2 cm) vertically above the base. The pin is in good, used condition with no loose or missing stones.
There has been some wear to the finish of the glass cabochons but you have to look closely to see it. The rollover clasp has a slight kink in the pin but it functions smoothly and holds securely.
