Victorian star-shaped brooch of bohemian garnets. This lovely Victorian 8-point star-shaped brooch is constructed in four layers of rose cut garnets of varying sizes. The two lowest tiers form eight point stars. The next two layers form an eight-petalled flower. The tube hinge and c-clasp date the piece to the 1880’s. Most Bohemian garnet jewellery is not hallmarked and is either gilt on a silver base or is classified as “garnet gold”, which was a commonly used alloy of metals. The garnets are a deep rose colour and continue to sparkle in the light in spite of their age. (Garnet is the birthstone for the month of January.) This is a beautiful piece of heirloom jewellery and would be a welcome addition to any collection of antique jewellery.
The piece has a diameter of 1 and 7/8 inches (5 cm); rises to a height of ¾ inch (2 cm); and weighs 15 grammes (.52 oz.).
