Vintage Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) Black Ash Fancy Basket. This is a beautiful ash splint basket that was most likely Mohawk made, circa 1950, since it was purchased at an estate sale near Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory (Ontario). The basket is constructed such that ash splint “curls” form the supporting “legs” for the piece. Curls also decorate the outside and top of the lid. Due to light exposure, the original red colour of the ash stretchers has faded so that it is no longer visible on the outside. However, the inside of the lid, which remained unexposed to light, is still brightly coloured (see supporting photos).
The basket is 10 inches (25.5 cm) in diameter at its widest point and about 7½ inches (19.5 cm) tall.
Four of the decorative curls on the top of the lid have been damaged (look carefully at the photos) but the damage is barely noticeable and does not detract from the function or the beauty of the piece. Other than colour loss, the basket is in good to excellent condition.
