Vintage Sherman brooch and clip earrings. From the 1950’s. Sherman jewellery still has a loyal following among collectors in Canada, even though the company went out of business in 1981. Gustav Sherman used only Swarovski crystals and the best of findings for his designs. The stones were all hand set and the backgrounds were rhodium or gold plated. His jewellery was sold in the higher end stores such as Birks. This demi-parure is very unusual and quite rare because the lighter coloured stones are alexandrite crystals which change colour depending on whether the light source is natural or not. In indoor lighting the alexandrite rhinestones are pale blue with flashes of pink and purple. In natural light they change to green with flashes of sky blue, gold and purple. The fushia coloured stones remain the same intense shade regardless of the light source. Unfortunately, the still photos are unable to capture the lively flash and sparkle of this set.
The brooch is an equilateral triangle, each side being 1¾ inches (4.75 cm) in length. The rhinestone setting is stacked three dimensionally so that the piece is 5/8 inch (1.75 cm) deep. The clip earrings are 1 inch (2.5 cm) by 5/8 inch (1.75 cm).
This is a beautiful and unusual set that remains in excellent condition and looks as if it has hardly been worn.
