Vintage wooden bird-shaped sewing caddy with German-made scissors. Circa 1930. During the 1920’s and 1930’s husbands, sons and boyfriends crafted these bird-shaped sewing caddies as gifts for the important women in their lives. This hand-made and hand-painted thread holder, in shades of black and orange, will hold five spools of thread. The bird’s back has been crafted into a pincushion. The beak is formed by a pair of stainless steel scissors made by Linder and Company in Solingen, Germany. Stamped “Morningstar” on one side and “Linder & Co. OHLIGS Germany” on the other, these scissors still work. This piece has a homey, folk art quality to it.
The caddy is 7½ inches (19.5 cm) to the top of the bird’s head. When the scissors are in place, the piece is 8½ inches (21.5 cm) tall. The octagonal base has a 6 inch (15.5 cm) diameter.
The caddy and scissors show signs of wear but the paint remains vivid and the scissors still cut well.
