Wedgwood Etruria green and white hunt scene 6 inch pitcher. This design was initially produced by Wedgwood at Etruria from around 1912. The “D’ye Ken John Peel” series featured a moulded relief hunting scene. It was named after the huntsman, John Peel, made famous by a 19th century song which romanticized the sport of foxhunting in England in the 1840’s-50’s. “D’ye Ken” means “do you know” in the dialects of northern England (where John Peel lived) and in Scotland.
At introduction, the range of D’Ye Ken wares included jugs, cracker jars and ashtrays. They could be left undecorated as plain cream-coloured earthenware items or were enhanced by the addition of enamel colours or lustres. The last time any of the D’ye Ken John Peel items were produced was during the 1960’s*
The green and white version here is seldom seen. We have two on offer: a 6 inch (15.2 cm) tall and a slightly smaller 5 inch (12.7 cm) tall version. They look beautiful as a pair but are also available individually.
Height: 6″ (15.2 cm)
Width from the handle to the spout: 6 1/2″ (16.5 cm)
Capacity: 32 ounces (909 milliliters)
The handle has been professionally repaired, is barely visible, and we have been told that this does not seriously affect its value because it was done by a certified conservator. There is also minor crazing and discolouration around the top cream-coloured band. See photos for details.
